2018 Holiday Driving Safety Tips
Prepare Your Vehicle
First, before any trips to your relatives, it’s important that you prepare your vehicle. The only thing worse than battling holiday traffic is battling it from the side of the road. Make sure all of your recommended maintenance has been completed and be sure to prepare an emergency roadside assistance kit with plenty of first aid equipment and tools like jumper cables and a car jack.
Be On The Defense
While you may be following all traffic laws, other drivers may not be, especially during the rush of the holidays. We like to decrease our speed and increase our following distance whenever we are in congested traffic to make sure there is plenty of time to react to an on-road event. Be sure to also keep an eye on your blind spots and scan the roads for reckless drivers.
In order to be on the defense, you will need to give yourself a little extra time to get to your destination. Not accounting for traffic jams and not wanting to miss out on annual family traditions is one of many causes for an increase in speeds and weaving in and out of lanes during the holidays. It’s also a good idea to have a backup route planned in advance in the case of an accident or a surge of traffic on a popular highway.
Designate a Driver
This should go without saying, but it’s important so we are going to say it anyway. Any time you are planning to go to a holiday event where alcohol will be served, always make sure to discuss with your group in advance who will be the designated driver, so everyone is on the same page.
